Since it launched in 1963, the Seiko 5 has been nothing short of a marvel and it’s been highly regarded as one of the best watches you can ever buy due to its value for money.
The “5” got its name from Seiko due to the 5 attributes it needed to carry when the watch was being designed. A day-date complication, Water-resistant, Self-winding movement, recessed crown all within a durable case. This automatic is sub £100, that’s why the hype is real.
Fast forward to 2019 and the Seiko 5 is back and back with a bang. Rather than release one watch, Seiko has announced 27 different watches to form a whole new portfolio.
In terms of styling, the new 5 range has a new “5” logo but has borrowed a lot of its looks from its older cousin, the ever-s0-popular Seiko SKX. A watch that is also considered a G.O.A.T in its own category, it’s easy to understand why Seiko would do a quick copy and paste. The SKX is for many a standard piece in any collection.
The Seiko 5 portfolio is broken down into 5 styles described as follows.
Sports Style – “Go beyond the norm”
The sport range is comprised of 11 variations included those with stainless bracelets. Unlike the SKX stainless bracelets have moved over from a “Jubilee” look and feel over to a more rugged “oyster” one. There are beautiful variations in this style including the SRPD53K1, a classic take on the SKX009 quarter-Pepsi bezel look.
Our favourite has to the SPRD63k1. A green dial, green bezel look on a stainless bracelet with orange accents on the hands and markers making it pop beautifully.

Suit style – “The Power of refinement”
There are 8 variations in the Suit style range, designed for a sporty look in a formal manner. What stands out most is that 5 of the 8 wear stainless shark mesh Omega Ploprof-Esque bracelets which look great and timeless.

Specialist style – “A look for all times”
Comprising of 3 variations, the specialist pieces are for the non-sporty customer. Whilst it shares the same case size, markers, hands and bezels. It’s colour palettes are more neutral and formal. The flagship in this range being the stainless rose gold looking style on a silicon bracelet.

Street style – “Do it your way”
3 variations make up the Street Style range, including a triple black version in the SRPD79K1. All watches feature a military-style nylon strap.

Sense Style – “Creativity is all about the detail”
Only 2 versions in this final range but we feel it could house what we feel might be the most popular variant out of the 27.
The SRPD77K1 is a beautiful example of a sports watch to wear every day and informally. Sporting a green nylon strap, it has beautiful orange sweeping second hand which compliments the deep green so well and the textured dial just finishes everything off perfectly. Details.
Whilst all are individual in their own way, all pieces carry the same 4R36 automatic in-house movement with a 41-hour power reserve.
Size-wise, all watches are 42.5mm and 13.4mm thick so very similar to the SKX here again.

Price
Whilst they’re slightly more expensive than the last Seiko 5’s, you can expect these to come in at sub £250 making them an absolute steal for that price.
