Sony PlayStation 5 Showcase Reveals Pricing, Results in Preorder Frenzy

Wednesday 16th September…the clapback!

Not even seven days removed from Microsoft’s price and release date reveal for their next-gen consoles – the Series S and X – Sony has returned a salvo with not only a price and release date of the Playstation 5 of November 19th in the UK (just over a week after the Xbox release and PS5 launch in seven key territories), but also a healthy splattering of titles and some clarity on backward compatibility options.

Much like the Xbox, PlayStation 5 will be available in two variations, a digital-only model, or a full-fat version with a Blu-Ray disc slot.

Priced at £349 and £449 respectively, the starting price may be £100 more than the entry-level Xbox, but both Playstation models are identical in horsepower as opposed to the slightly pared back Series S.

Sony confirmed the PS5 will feature backward compatibility via a legacy mode that will allow developers to create PS4 titles for the next-gen without losing functionality, but boosting visuals and audio.

It’s proposed that at launch only 100 PS4 games will available to PS5 but “that will increase over time” according to head honcho Jim Ryan.

Based on last night’s showcase, the games are where PlayStation is going to really set the bar with higher resolutions, ray-tracing and more – highlights included:

  • Spider-Man: Miles Morales
  • Horizon: Forbidden West
  • Godfall
  • Devil May Cry V: Special Edition
  • Final Fantasy XVI
  • Hogwarts Legacy
  • Resident Evil 8 (Village)
  • God of War: Ragnarok

Look out for our more in-depth look at the release titles coming to PS5 soon and check out the full live stream below.

Pre-orders are currently available at most retailers, but they are disappearing very quickly…thanks in no small part to the complete lack of warning on availability!
