“It’s time to play”.
It seems like a straightforward tagline you would find in any PlayStation advert over the years. But on this occasion, those simple words have thrown the internet into meltdown.
Unless you have been living under a rock, you know that this year we will be treated to the release of not one, but two next-generation consoles: Sony’s PS5 and Microsoft’s Xbox Series X.
Which is better? Which is more powerful? Which has more exclusive games? Which is coming first? The debate has been raging into the small hours and fans are getting surprisingly tribal.
Not even two weeks ago 4chan; a collection of online forums where people can leave comments and share images anonymously – (and the perfect breeding ground for bullsh*t) leaked some information about the upcoming PS5.
One piece of information among the many predictions was that PlayStation 5’s tagline will be “It’s time to play”. Sure, enough a week later PlayStation Europe’s Twitter account started sporting this new tag.
It could just be a coincidence, but that’s enough to get keyboards tapping across the world suggesting everything else in this leak must be true.
Things like official reveal date, release date, price, launch titles, future exclusives, and internal specifications. As of writing, none of this is official, so we won’t indulge unverified rumours.
What we do know is we will be playing before Christmas 2020 and it is rumoured to be backwards compatible, meaning your PS4 games and accessories like controller and VR headsets will work just fine.
It will load ten times faster and offer a multitude of brand-new IPs. It will support 8K resolution and 3D audio output and of course have a hefty price tag somewhere near £450.
Sony will be holding an unveiling event soon that’ll give us a look at the console itself, plus answer many of these unconfirmed theories.
Until then, the main game is the waiting game…
