Saturday 8th August marks National CBD Day and with its ever-increasing accessibility, we break down its properties, health benefits, and assess its rise and impact within the global wellbeing community.
What is CBD?
Cannabidiol commonly abbreviated to CBD is a naturally occurring chemical compound apparent in a hemp plant, and its often confused with its co-inhabitant Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). CBD differs in its effects on the body where the feeling of relaxation can be felt without the psychoactive effects of THC.
Due to its positive effect on one’s wellbeing, its commonly used as a holistic remedy to alleviate a variety of different health concerns.
The purchase of CBD products is legal in the UK as long as it’s from a licenced medical distributor, or if sold as a nutritional supplement – as long as the THC content in the product is less than 0.2%. CBD is of course not a controlled substance, whereas THC is classified as illegal.
What are its health benefits?
While there have been many studies into the effectiveness of CBD, not all the supposed health benefits have concrete evidence to support its claims. However, many studies and users will identify that it’s contributed towards pain relief, management and reduction of stress and anxiety, lowering blood pressure, and helping to reduce symptoms of cancer.
Its effectiveness in reducing pain and supporting those suffering from depression is seen as its most definitive contributors towards better wellbeing. Pain wise, it has been shown that it can help with chronic pain, arthritis and reduce inflammation. And again, when comparing its use to typical addictive pain or anxiety medication, its seen as a safer natural combatant towards the aforementioned ailments. It’s calming properties can also be seen as a safer alternative to alcohol consumption or smoking.
Why the sudden popularity?
It’s likely that you’d have seen it everywhere; CBD retailers, CBD food products, CBD cafés, CBD oils and creams, and the list goes on. As its now readily available, the public are becoming more aware of its benefits and understand that it differs from its psychoactive counterpart.
Not only that, but CBD is being endorsed by many in the public eye including the likes of Tom Hanks, Morgan Freeman, and George St. Pierre in addition to numerous other athletes and celebrities who have praised its effects. It has also been featured on a variety of TV programmes including This Morning.
