It’s been 30 years since its original release. Now the futuristic shoe returns in its iconic OG colourway.
Legendary sneaker designer and Nike Hall of Famer Tinker Hatfield has so many iconic sneakers in his portfolio that it’s pretty easy to lose count, However, one that has been etched into the minds of sneakerheads worldwide is the Nike Air Huarache.
Released back in 1991 the Huarache was made to be a no-nonsense running shoe that would be stripped back to the bare essentials, most noticeably with the absence of the Nike Swoosh altogether.
The Huarache was named after the Mexican sandal from Pre-columbian ages. Early forms of original Huaraches or Kwarachi can be dated back to the countryside farming communities of the Jalisco and Yucatan.
“Have you hugged your foot today” was the tagline Nike went out with in the ad’s to promote the shoe which had a very futuristic and unorthodox upper for its time, especially for a running shoe.
With its neoprene/lyrca upper the shoe was meant to fit like a sock and hug your feet throughout activity. It’s design has managed to stand the test of time and it still looks futuristic today as we approach its 30th Anniversary.
With the help of Michael Johnson to promote the ad and Jerry Seinfeld giving it a run out on his show, the shoe quickly transcended its original purpose from the track and into fashion.
This weeks release will see the shoe come in its original form with the Nike logo on the tongue replacing the “Air Huarache” logo which came onto the shoe at a later date.
The European release on Friday will be for one of its original colourways in “Scream Green” and its yet to be confirmed if anyone of the other OG colours will be coming out at a later date.
UK readers can get the Nike Air Huarache Scream Green from the SNKRS app on the 5th March from 8am. Be quick!
