Puma Golf kick-off 2021 with a new take on a popular shoe
The beginning of the year is an exciting time for us here at CRISP. because its when we start to all of the new seasons golfing gear start to hit retail outlets in time for Spring/Summer.
One of the products that caught our eye right away was the new Puma Golf Ignite Cage Crafted. Bit of mouthful but we’ll explain.
The new shoe is a more premium take on previous silhouettes being the Ignite Caged series, which we were big fans of considering the technology in the shoe.
That technology we loved before is still carried over but this time in a more premium feel for the golfing purist’s out there that like their footwear a tad more traditional.
Puma technology
Before we move on to the design and what we thought of the shoe its important to talk about the technology Puma offer in their golf footwear.
IGNITE Midsole
The Ignite Midsole is Puma’s own proprietary and revolutionary foam. The Ignite sole has actually been used in a number of different shoes across a range of sports so it was no surprise when puma chose to include them in their golf range. The foam used in IGNITE aims to maximise energy return whilst keep a high degree of stability and support for the foot at the same time.
PWRADAPT Spikes
The PWRADAPT Spikes used in Puma’s shoes actually sit inside PWRADAPT pods. Each pod on the spiked shoe is anatomically positioned to give you the most traction and comfort regardless of the type of lie you’re standing on the course.
Each one of the 6 positioned pods work independently of each other and move left, right up and down to adapt to your surroundings and offer the most support and connection to the ground.
PWRFRAME
Puma PWRFRAME is an ultra-thin TPU frame strategically and methodically placed in high-stress areas to offer a wide range of movemement and comfort whilst keep foot sturdy at the same time.
Our thoughts
Design
New shoes always get us excited here at CRISP. but when we first heard that there was a new Ignite Caged Crafted on the horizon, it’s fair to say we were probably more excited than most based on the description alone with it looking more premium instead of sporty.
Straight out of the box, the shoe did not disappoint.
The subtle updates to the Ignite Cage Crafted makes for an extremely attractive silhouette. It manages to have the right amount of balance between sporty and class which would no doubt compliment any of your sporting attire for both your summer and winter rounds.
The whole shoe carries sleek lines with minimal design but its the small details that really make this shoe pop. The gold foil Puma logo on the cage, tongue tab and heel really give it a premium finish and the Gripzone gum sole with coral spikes add that tiny bit of colour that just, works.
Waterproofing
We haven’t managed to get this out in full round in the rain yet to test these in real conditions but we did give them a full blast with a hose from all directions. It’s safe to say the Puma’s will protect you from the elements and if they don’t they have a 1-year waterproof guarantee.
So how did it feel on the foot?
The Shoe itself is crafted with tough and seamless waterproof leather upper, whilst it looks like it might not be comfortable it does an incredible job at moulding itself around your foot, especially if you have a wide foot.
Getting the shoe on can be difficult at first because it is constructed around an inner lining called the adaptive fit system. Once the shoe is on however it fits like a sock and feels incredibly supportive around all areas of your foot, so much so that we didn’t even need to use the laces.
Walking around in these, the shoes actually feel like a spikeless shoe.
In terms of sizing, we’d highly recommend going true to size for thick socks or even half a size down as these will come up slightly big.
We haven’t fully tested the shoe over 18 holes due to COVID restrictions but we’ll update this post as soon as its possible.
Verdict
It’s a bit too early to say if we’d be willing to make it our shoe of choice at this stage however from what we’ve seen and felt so far, it’s safe to say we’ll be keeping the new Puma’s in our rotation for this season. We think they tick all of the boxes in what we’d want in a spiked shoe along with a really clean design.
We’d opt for the Black versions personally but there is a colourway for everyone in the release.
The Crafted Cage also retail for £120 RRP so it’s a whole lot of shoe for the price.
