Summary
A functional yet practical golf shoe that challenges the status-quo with its aggressive looks.
Puma have remixed the bold RS-X sneaker silhouette and added a golfing twist.
The revival of the chunky sneaker is going through a renaissance period. Visit any fashion capital and you’ll no doubt see a plethora of under 30’s rocking the latest ‘dad shoes’.
Puma made their mark in the market with the release of the RS collection. RS which stands for “Running System” is a fusion of 80/90’s uppers coupled with lightweight and ultra-cushioned midsole technology. The result? An extremely chunky sneaker that can stand out amongst the crowd.
Since its release, Puma have not shyed away from pushing boundaries on the RS range. Their collabs with brands such as Mercedes, Sega and BMW really showcase the brand’s reputation. But what if Puma went one step further and chose not cross brands, but to cross-sport altogether.
Introducing the Puma RS-G
On first impressions and straight out of the box, The RS-G looks identical to the RS-X. Look a bit closer and you’ll notice the tweaks Puma have made to transform this shoe from a lifestyle sports shoe to a fully-fledged performance golf shoe.
The Multilayer upper is now replaced with a Micro-fiber TPU upper which is seam-sealed making it fully waterproof and waterproof guaranteed for 1 year.
The midsole has also had an upgrade and changed to Puma’s “FUSION FOAM” designed to give you more energy return and stability.
The last difference Puma have made is on the outsole itself. Previously it would have been made for running in mind and a whole new geometric traction pattern means it’s tailored specifically for the Golf course.
As a spikeless shoe, Puma has needed to make sure they’ve got enough traction regardless of where you on the course. Bunker, fairway, rough or greens.
What’s it like to wear?
Having rained (a lot) the day before our round and on the day itself, we were lucky enough to be greeted with the elements needed to take these shoes on a proper test drive.
On first impressions, the shoe actually looks smaller in the hand than it does in pictures. Some may be put off but the chunky appearance but we found them to be pretty well proportioned and were pleasantly surprised.
This shoe is light, no questions. The replacement of the uppers means it very light and perfect for when you start feeling the fatigue on the later holes on the back 9.
The waterproofing on the uppers were brilliant. Due to the microfibre fabric, they’re made out, the water almost rolls off keeping your feet dry.
After 18 holes, We found them to be extremely comfy but for some, it might take some getting used to if you’re moving over from a traditional golf shoe. They feel extremely bouncy and the chunky upper almost makes you feel a tad bit higher at set-up.
One thing we loved about them is just how snug they are and how they hug your feet. The tongue is tied down with internal elastic so its almost sock-like to the fit. Based on this, on sizing we highly recommend you go a half size or even one one-size up.
There’s something we love about the aggressiveness and functionality of this shoe, it manages to both hold its own whilst still managing to challenge the status-quo.
The RS-G are currently available in 3 base colourways in Black, White ,Peacoat and Vaporous Grey, but still retain the camo-esque accents. For those who really want to push the boat out, there are even a pair of special limited edition Patriotic Bars-n-Stars version to commemorate Gary Woodlands win at the 2019 US Open.
Anyone who likes to mix up their equipment and apparel with something different and bold, we’d definitely recommend giving the RS-G a try.
At the time of writing, the Puma RS-G are available from most Golf retailers prices at £89.99 subject to availability.
